Janelle Monae Suffers Wardrobe Malfunction In Oscars Opening Number

Janelle Monáe made the 2020 Oscars come alive with her opening performance.

The 34-year-old singer and actress kicked off Hollywood's biggest night with a bang with a performance of "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," paying tribute to the late Mister Rogers.

However, as Janelle transformed into one of America's most beloved storytellers — putting on Mister Rogers' quintessential red cardigan— she suffered a minor wardrobe malfunction as a button on her blouse came undone. But as they say in show biz, one little button doesn't stop the show as Janelle put the button right back into place and was off bringing cheer to Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (a.k.a. Sunday's (February 9) Oscars)

At one point during Janelle's performance, she went into the audience and sang directly to Tom Hanks — who was nominated for best actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. She even handed Tom her hat to wear.

Janelle later took off her cardigan and began to sing an original song dedicated to the year's nominated films and actors. Pose star Billy Porter also joined her onstage as the two performed a beautiful duet with Janelle on the piano and Billy on the mic.

Also during the performance, Janelle spoke about how proud she was to be opening the esteemed award show, saying, "I'm so proud to stand here as a Black, queer artist telling stories. Happy Black History Month."
