The Netflix series ‘Monster’: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has ruffled a lot of feathers. The way this series was presented, this show is a series that exposes these unconscionable crimes, centered around the underserved victims and their communities impacted by the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed one of America’s most notorious serial killers to continue his murderous spree in plain sight for over a decade.
The interesting part is that the show did not include the victims in the permission process and began to air the most traumatic part of their lives without consent! The Breakfast Club is quite confused of the purpose of the series aside from the entertainment part. Most true crimes series incorporate the victims to add the unknown side of the story, however in 'Monster': Jeffrey Dahmer Story has made him the lead in this story, and some say that he is being humanized. Rightfully so, the victims are not happy! Tracy Edwards was one of Dahmer's victims, however he managed to escape and ultimately helped police capture Dahmer.
From 1991 to today, Edwards has not been able to receive help or bounce back from this traumatic moment in his life and began to spiral. Seeing that this series has resurfaced old wounds that is triggering the victims. The Breakfast Club asked the questions, 1.) Have you watched the show and what are your thoughts 2.) “What is the takeaway from this series?”
