M&MS Characters Are Changing to Be More Inclusive

When we think about M&Ms, most of us are probably just thinking about a yummy chocolate snack and how we can't stop eating them. But now makers of the candy want folks to think about inclusivity as well.

Mars Incorporated, the company behind the tasty treats, just announced a new global commitment to “creating a world where everyone feels they belong, and society is inclusive.” Their aim is to “increase a sense of belonging for ten million people by 2025, helping to connect and celebrate one another.”

So, how do they plan on doing this? Well, first off, M&M characters in commercials and ads will be given a fresh and modern look. For example, the green M&M, which used to be depicted as a sexy symbol in white go-go boots, will now wear sneakers, with her description noting she likes to be “a hypewoman for my friends.” Meanwhile, the brown M&M is described as “not bossy. Just the boss.”

There will also be a new focus on M&Ms iconic color palette, and there will be several different shapes and sizes of mascots altogether. The ampersand in the M&M name will be more distinctive to demonstrate the idea of bringing people together and the voices will be updated to be “more inclusive, welcoming, and unifying, while remaining rooted in our signature jester wit and humor.”
