While most of us are riding out COVID-19 at home, Matt Damon is currently stuck in a small Irish town while he waits out the country's lockdown. The 49-year-old actor was visiting the seaside town of Dalkey for an upcoming film when the pandemic forced Ireland to go into a shutdown similar to our own. In recent days, a number of Damon sightings in Dalkey have made their way online.
One photo of Damon, in particular, has gone viral in Ireland. The photo shows Damon rocking a pair of track pants while holding on to a stuffed SuperValu bag. In Ireland, SuperValu is the equivalent of Shop Rite or Stop and Shop. "He's one of us," one person wrote on Twitter. Another shared the photo and wrote "Matt Damon got stuck in Dublin due to the lockdown, and now a few weeks in he looks like your cousin from Monaghan who's up for de weekend to go to de night club hai bai."
In addition to becoming Ireland's latest favorite meme, Damon has simply delighted the people of Dalkey with his presence. While he's reportedly following social distancing practices during his stay in Ireland, residents posted photos with him from before the lockdown started and have shared stories of spotting him out for grocery store runs and jogs around town. "Yep saw him in Dalkey couple weeks ago, was giving him the side eye 'I know him...' look, he's looking at me, then a grin as he passed by. It was the Mammy who said 'that's yer man you like, that Damon lad,'" one woman shared on Twitter.
Damon hasn't yet publicly commented on his situation, though it's clear the citizens of Dalkey, Ireland are glad to have him.
